Masonry is the building of structures from individual units laid in and bound together by mortar; the term masonry can also refer to the units themselves. The common materials of masonry construction are brick, stone such as marble, granite, travertine, limestone; concrete block, glass block, and tile. Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction. However, the materials used, the quality of the mortar and workmanship, and the pattern in which the units are assembled can strongly affect the durability of the overall masonry construction. Masonry units, such as brick, tile, stone, glass brick or concrete block generally conform to the requirements specified in the 2006 International Building Code (IBe Section 2103. Masonry Heater

Masonry Heater

$44.61

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A masonry heater (or masonry stove) is a device for warming a home (or any interior space) that captures the heat from periodic burning of fuels (primarily wood), and then radiates that heat over a long period at a fairly constant temperature. The technology exists in many forms from the Roman hypocaust to the Austrian/German kachelofen. The hypocaust is a system for heating the floors and walls of buildings (especially baths) using the smoke and exhaust of a single fire. In Eastern and Northern Europe and North Asia, these kachelofens (or steinofens) evolved in many different forms and names, such as a Russian Stove/Fireplace (Russian: ), a Finnish Stove (in Finnish: pystyuuni or kaakeliuuni, "tile oven") and the Swedish Stove (in Swedish: kakelugn, "tile stove" or "contra-flow stove") associated with Carl Johan Cronstedt. The Chinese developed it into their Kang bed-stove.

The Stone Skeleton: Structural Engineering of Masonry Architecture

$31.44

In this book, Heyman provides a thorough and intuitive understanding of masonry structures such as arch bridges, Greek temples, and Gothic cathedrals. Although the approach is firmly scientific, the author does not use complex mathematics. He introduces the basis of masonry analysis in the first two chapters, after which he considers individual structures–including piers, pinnacles, towers, vaults and domes–in more detail. This lucid and informative text will be of particular interest to structural engineers, practicing architects and others involved in the renovation and care of old stone buildings.

Mortar (Masonry)

Mortar (Masonry)

$68.51

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Mortar is a workable paste used to bind construction blocks together and fill the gaps between them. The blocks may be stone, brick, cinder blocks, etc. Mortar becomes hard when it sets, resulting in a rigid aggregate structure. Modern mortars are typically made from a mixture of sand, a binder such as cement or lime, and water. Mortar can also be used to fix, or point, masonry when the original mortar has washed away. The first mortars were made of mud and clay. Because of a lack of stone and an abundance of clay, Babylonian constructions were of baked brick, using lime or pitch for mortar. According to Roman Ghirshman, the first evidence of humans using a form of mortar was at the ziggurat of Sialk in Iran, built of sundried bricks in 2900 BC. The Chogha Zanbil Temple in Iran was built in about 1250 BC with kilnfired bricks and a strong mortar of bitumen. Masonry; A Short Text-Book on Masonry Construction

Masonry; A Short Text-Book on Masonry Construction

$32.51

A Short Text-Book on Masonry Construction, Including Descriptions of the Materials Used, their Preparation and Arrangement in Structures – 1915 – PREFACE – THE following pages have been written to furnish a concise treatment of masonry construction for use as a text in courses of instruction which do not provide sufficient time for the study of a more comprehensive treatise. The matter as presented, however, may serve as a skeleton for an extended course of study by making use of the references at the end of the book which suggest supplementary reading. The references are arranged in the order in which the subject matter is considered in the text. Modern methods are described and modern tools and machinery are illustrated. Reinforced concrete masonry has not been considered, as there are numerous books which treat this subject both in an elementary and in a thorough manner. The specifications in Part III give the best modern methods of selecting materials and their use in structures. M A H JANUARY 1, 915. — CONTENTS — PART I .
